Legendary Actor “Manoj Kumar” Passes Away at 87: A Tribute to ‘Bharat Kumar’

Mumbai, February 10, 2025 – The Indian film industry mourns the loss of veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, who passed away at the age of 87. Known as ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his patriotic roles, Kumar was a celebrated figure in Bollywood, leaving behind a legacy of iconic films that celebrated Indian culture and values.

A Life Dedicated to Cinema

Born as Harikrishna Giri Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan), Manoj Kumar adopted his stage name inspired by the legendary actor Dilip Kumar. He made his acting debut in 1957 with Fashion but gained widespread recognition with Hariyali Aur Rasta (1962).

His career soared with films like Woh Kaun Thi? (1964), Himalay Ki God Mein (1965), and Upkar (1967), the latter earning him the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. His portrayal of patriotic characters in movies like Purab Aur Paschim (1970) and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974) cemented his status as a symbol of national pride.

A Legacy Beyond Acting

Apart from acting, Manoj Kumar was an accomplished director and producer, known for his socially relevant themes. His films often highlighted India’s struggle for independence, communal harmony, and the importance of Indian traditions.

He received the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2016 for his outstanding contributions to Indian cinema.

Fans and celebrities, including Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed their grief on social media. PM Modi tweeted, “Manoj Kumar Ji’s films embodied the spirit of India. His passing is a great loss to the world of art and culture.”

Manoj Kumar is survived by his wife, Shashi Goswami, and two sons. His funeral will be held in Mumbai with state honors.
